Dog and Puppy Training

Palmira Healing Puppies offers Training for all new owners purchasing one of our puppies, and to puppy owners that would like to support their new companion to grow into a true friend that they love spending time with.

Puppy Classes are available for pups between 10-16 weeks, creating and establishing a strong bond, building communication, and understanding between puppy and human. Learning the language that your puppy speaks!

Exposure to different environments is important before 16 weeks of age. Allow your puppy to experience different people, noise levels, traffic, parks etc. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated take them to places by keeping them off the ground, especially grass. Carry them into a shop or sit them in a trolley. Gradually increase exposure at a level that your puppy can manage.

Socialisation is often mistaken for meeting as many dogs or puppies as possible. All canine meetings need to be positive and controlled. However, socialisation is about exposure to environments and people; sounds and noise levels. More exposure from a young age will allow your puppy to be calm in these situations.

Importance of Training

Start training your puppy from the moment you get them home, don’t delay or wait for puppy preschool. Your puppy is a sponge and learning all the time. What they learn in those initial weeks will stay with them. It is always better to start the right way, rather than trying to correct unwanted behaviours.

Punishment should not be a part of training a puppy, they are learning and will make mistakes. Consider that your puppy doesn’t understand and change how you are communicating to them; or he/she is just having too much fun with something else; help them to understand what you want them to do; always praise a preferred action. Guide rather than punish, your puppy will learn with repetition and consistency. The most I would do to divert a puppy from an unwanted or potentially dangerous behaviour would be to clap my hands with an ‘arghhh’ sound, puppy will usually look your way, quickly praise the change of focus. Remove potentially dangerous items from puppy’s reach to minimise the risk and remove all items that puppy is not meant to ‘play’ with to avoid damage or an understanding that said items are allowed as chew toys.

Explain your language to your puppy to make sure they understand what each command means. Once they ‘get it’, reward. Be consistent in the way you present each command. Be clear in how you are teaching. If your puppy is not getting it, slow down the learning and look at each step again. Allow puppy to get each step right, before going on to the next one.

Reward…. Repeat….Reward ……Repeat…
